Earlier this week, over 40 senior figures from the UK’s motorsport industry we treated to a rare glimpse inside Grainger & Worrall’s world-class precision casting facility at Bridgnorth. The event, organised by the Motorsport Industry Association (MIA), was part of a series of open days that showcase exceptional organisations working within the global motorsport sector.
Kicking off with a welcome and introduction from Grainger & Worrall director. Edward Grainger, the day included an explanation of the casting process by technical director Keith Denholm and an address from MIA chairman Chris Aylett.
Visitors to the Grainger & Worrall open day were also treated to an exclusive guided tour of the expert’s high performance engineering facility which included an insight into the prototype, volume production and specialist motorsport departments within the company. As well as seeing the complex sand casting process in operation, MIA guests were able to observe some of the industry leading innovations the firm has pioneered, helping it to remain at the forefront of high precision casting.
The company is unique in the UK, as the only independent casting business to employ 3D sand printing as part of its rapid prototyping process. The tour also gave visitors the chance to see how Grainger & Worrall utilises CT scanning, otherwise known as tomography, to check the structural integrity of each finished component.
Commenting on the event’s success, Edward Grainger, said: “Being asked by the MIA to host one of its open days is a huge compliment and we were delighted to have this opportunity to showcase the people, skills and technology that makes this business so special. Reaction from the industry guests was wholly positive and it was really satisfying to hear visitors commenting on the level of sophistication and science we have introduced to the traditional casting process. Our use of 3D printing and CT scanning were just two innovations that impressed our visitors.”
