GW Celebrates: Lucid Air Sapphire

In this series of articles,  GW celebrates great engineering products. This month it is the turn of luxury electric vehicle maker Lucid’s Air Sapphire.

Although the first Sapphire isn’t due to be delivered for a few months yet, the vehicle is creating lots of interest – and with good reason. While specific numbers haven’t been released, Lucid has made some strong claims ahead of the launch. These include:

  • 1200 horsepower
  • 0-60mph in less than 2 seconds
  • 0-100mph in less than 4 seconds
  • A top speed exceeding 200 mph

Achieving this is an extraordinary engineering effort, including innovative approaches to design and battery technology.

Adding an extra motor may seem counterintuitive when making a lighter electric vehicle. But the third motor in the Sapphire actually weighs less than two standard motors, allowing the vehicle to achieve up to 1200 horsepower while remaining lightweight.

While the full details of the Air Sapphire remain secret until the launch, we think it’s important to celebrate the engineering skill and expertise behind the vehicle. We understand the precision engineering needed to launch the Sapphire and meet the challenges created in electric vehicle manufacturing– it’s engineering at its absolute best.

We can’t wait to see the final vehicle when it’s launched in a few months.
